Winter is winding down, but it won’t be long before we’re turning on our air conditioning in Richmond, VA. As we get ready for spring cleaning, your AC system needs a little maintenance before you start using it again. Preparing now will help make sure everything is working properly and efficiently before spring and summer, and prevent a breakdown when you need it the most.
- Maximize outside air flow—leaves, grass and weeds grow and collect around the outside part of your AC unit during the winter, blocking air flow and greatly reducing your air conditioner’s efficiency. Clearing away debris ensures good air flow, increasing efficiency and keeping your electric bills in check.
- Change the filter—it’s one of the most important things you can do for your HVAC system, but many people overlook it. Change standard AC filters monthly. Pleated and HEPA filters last longer, but you can vacuum some of the dust off between filter changes. Just like clearing the outside unit, regular filter changes will keep your AC in good working order and working efficiently.
- The drip pan and the drain line—they drain the condensation off and away from your AC unit and safely out of your home. Dirt can build up and cause a clog, and if it does, that water has to go somewhere. Should one or both become clogged, you’ll have water backups in your home, and the potential for water damage. Mold and/or mildew can develop in your home and grow. Get ahead of this problem: run a cup of ordinary chlorine bleach down the line, and follow it with a gallon of water to clear any possible clogs before you start your AC this year.
