The older we get, the faster time seems to pass. Can you believe that 1990 was 30 years ago? It feels like it was just last decade! While some things get better with age, unfortunately, your heating and cooling unit is not one of them. That’s why it’s important to keep a lookout for signs that it’s time to replace your HVAC system.

Owning a home can be very expensive, so you might be hesitant to look into the cost of replacing your furnace or air conditioning. If you’re spending money on regular repairs or if it suddenly breaks down, though, it will cost you a lot more. That’s why it’s always best to be proactive when it comes to maintaining your home.

Your HVAC System is 10+ Years Old

A well-maintained HVAC system could continue running a little longer than a decade, but not much beyond that. If you’re not having it serviced regularly, though, it probably won’t last nearly as long. It’s such an integral part of your home, so taking good care of it should be a priority.

Every year, newer models are hitting the market. The benefit is that heating and cooling units are more efficient than ever before. While having a replacement installed will be a financial investment, it could save you a lot of money on your monthly energy bill and repair costs.

You’re Struggling to Keep Your Home Comfortable

Does it seem like your HVAC system is struggling to maintain a consistent temperature throughout your home? Are some rooms in your home cooler or hotter than others? Have you noticed your unit starting up more often or needing to stay on longer?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, it might be time to replace your HVAC system. Start by changing your air filter and having your air ducts cleaned to see if things improve. If not, it’s a good idea to have a qualified expert inspect the unit to make sure it’s the right size for your home and/or if it needs to be replaced.

Is It Dusty In Here?

This might sound like a strange sign that it’s time to replace your HVAC system, but if you’ve noticed more dust collecting around your home than usual, pay attention. Remember — your heating and cooling unit is also responsible for air flow, so this could signal a problem with ventilation.

Your HVAC system should be removing dander, debris, and other particles through the air ducts in order to maintain good indoor air quality. The fix could be as simple as replacing your air filter, but if that doesn’t work, you’ll need to figure out why it’s not working as it should.

Your HVAC Is Noisy (And Stinky)

Has your HVAC system gotten louder with age? Don’t worry, that’s pretty normal. It’s noteworthy, however, if you start to notice grinding, squealing, or banging. You may discover that the new noises are the result of a loose or damaged part, but it’s important to investigate in case it’s something more serious.

Additionally, don’t ignore any new smells coming from your heating and cooling system. Sometimes, it’s a normal part of the seasons changing (such as the first time you turn on the heater at the start of winter). It could also be mold or a damaged wire, among other things. It’s better to err on the side of caution and have someone look at it.

Your HVAC Breaks Down Often

Not even a brand new HVAC unit is perfect, but if your existing system has needed a lot of servicing or repairs lately, it might be time to replace it. Every dollar you waste on a worn out heating and cooling system could have been better spent on a new model.

Let’s be honest — between the costs of parts and labor, HVAC repair can be very expensive. It’s especially rough when it happens unexpectedly. Rather than continue to throw money away, consider investing in an upgrade for your home.
