Your air conditioner is responsible for about half of your power bill in the summer. So the real question is, how do you reduce your air conditioning costs this summer? There are several factors that determine how efficiently your HVAC system runs, but keeping your power bill low is not as hard as it sounds. Here are some power saving tips to help your air conditioning system run more efficiently and to lower your electric bills this summer.
1. Pre-Season Service
The best way to ensure your air conditioner is working at its peak performance is to have it tuned up before the hot weather begins. Our HVAC technicians can examine your unit for any problems that could cause it to fail or may be causing it to work harder than it needs to. An air conditioner that is regularly cleaned and maintained will use less energy throughout the season.
2. Adjust Your Thermostat
Did you know you can save about 5% on your monthly cooling costs if you raise your thermostat by just one degree? The recommended setting to keep your home comfortable during the summer is 72-76 degrees. If you do not already have a programmable thermostat, you might consider having one put in to automatically prevent cooling your home when no one is there.
3. Use Ceiling Fans
You can improve the efficiency of your air conditioner by utilizing ceiling fans to circulate the cooled air in your home. During cooler days, having fans running may allow you to reduce the time you need your AC on.
4. Change Filters Regularly
Your air conditioner will run more efficiently when its airflow is at an optimal level. The best way to accomplish this is to check and change your filter every month. Clogged air filters make your air conditioner work harder to cool your home, which results in higher energy costs and added wear and tear on your system.
In the end, running your air conditioner can become a lot more cost effective by following these simple HVAC tips. I like that you pointed out that you can save yourself some trouble, and even money on your electric bill by making sure you have your air conditioner system serviced before the warmer weather kicks in. In past summers, cooling costs have been a prettier penny more than I’d like to pay. This past year, I had my system serviced, and I was really surprised at the difference of cooling costs compared to prior years! I think everyone should do this!
